I have finally learned my lesson about running while injured (especially with a back injury), DON’T DO IT! If you read through my post yesterday, you’ll see I struggled through a 12.34 miler, with my back not feeling great, and ended up at the hospital last night. It wasn’t in direct relation to the run, but I aggravated it so bad, that it kept spasming … and then I tried lifting a laundry basket later in the night, and I was done. I crawled my way to the couch, and laid there for 5 hours, taking ibuprofen and a vicodin that my wife had for her knee, and got NO RELIEF! So I went to the hospital, they pumped me full of pain killers, muscle relaxers, etc and I got some relief, and then they sent me home. There was NOTHING they could do for me at that point. They MADE me get up and move, and walk out on my own, and I went home, slept on the floor and feel half decent today. I have a script for ibuprofen (800mg) and a muscle relaxer, but I have to take it easy for a few days.
The doctor said it should subside in a few days, and isn’t something that generally lasts for a long time, so thats a relief. I will probably miss most of the week of training, and when we do get back in, we’ll take it a little easier. I guess I learn things the hard way, don’t run through an injury!
I think we can make enough adjustments to the training for this, I’m only in week 2 of it, so there won’t be too much damage done, but I have to rest. I think the body needs the rest anyway, so we’ll enjoy the downtime.
