ugh, a rough finish to my run today

So far the week has been pretty good with running .. i’m slowly working through my cold despite the ongoing cough that just won’t go away. It feels like i’m losing my voice now too, that won’t be a good thing (although some might be happy for that!)

We decided last night to entertain my wifes daughter and her husband by going out for dinner (since they came down from the Wyoming Valley area) at a local diner called the Bear Swamp Diner. I was concerned because with the training, I really have to watch what I eat, not only from a calorie point of view, but from an upset stomach point of view as well. I decided to keep it simple and get an open face turkey sandwich. I figure, turkey, mashed potatoes, bread … can’t lose, right? Well, the gravy came back to haunt me ..

So after munching down last night, this morning I had 8 miles scheduled despite the fact it was really cold for mid-May .. (it was 34 degrees at the house here) … so i bundled up and headed out. Note also that the cold air did NOTHING for my cough and cold. I made it to about mile 6 when the stomach distress started .. if anybody reading this has ever been 2-3 miles from a place where you can ‘use the facilities’, you’ll know the struggle I had. At least when I lived in northeast PA, there were always woods somewhere that I could hide into and ‘take care of business’ .. but here? Nope. All houses everywhere, and then the one place I could sneak into some trees, there was a bus driver sitting there waiting to start his run ….

After realizing that I wasn’t going to finish my run … at least at the moment, I thankfully turned a corner where I could go left and continue another mile, or turn right and head for the house … I chose to head to the house and just BARELY made it in the house.. it was rough. UGH! That open face turkey killed me… I never thought that it could do so much damage. So after taking care of the problem, I headed back out to finish up my last mile and half, so no loss I guess..

So you might ask, what is the lesson here? DON’T EAT AT NEW RESTAURANTS OR EAT NEW FOODS THE NIGHT BEFORE A TRAINING RUN!!! I’ve learned the hard way, take my advice…

Actually, if you search my blog, you’ll find this wasn’t the only time this ever happened .. its humorous, isn’t it? I remember the one time I actually carried toilet paper with me because I was afraid I couldn’t hold it, my how times have changed ….

Hopefully my 8 miler tomorrow will be better ….. 🙂
