With each new year we have the opportunity to reflect on the previous year and what we’ve accomplished. This is so much more important as an athlete who is continuing to aspire to greater things in future years.

I love how Strava gives its users a unique snapshot of the training year in review. It’s funny how when you are showing up every day, working out and especially in the peak training period before an “A” race, you don’t even think about the miles and time being spent, until now.

Here is my video from 2018, quite an accomplishment when I look back:

So where do we go from here and build upon this?

It’s motivation for me to continue to use the off-season as a tool to recover and rest, but to also stay conditioned as best as I can. The reality of the off-season is that its very hard to ramp down from the training after an “A” race, and I felt this coming off of Ironman Florida. It was already Thanksgiving and I still wanted to pound, pound, pound the miles and time but it wasn’t until the end of November that I finally ramped down enough to start recovering.

Don’t make this mistake, because with training starting soon, I’ve now just started to really feel the recovery taking hold. And it will be time to be more focused.

Here are some highlights of my #yearinsport:

  • 333 of 365 days active … means I only had 32 days off all year from training. Yeah, probably not enough, lol.
  • 570 hours of training in total
  • 6,184 miles covered across all 3 sports

Impressive? Not sure that is the target here, more about accomplishment than anything.

I’m going to use this to build for 2019, great things happen ahead of us when we reflect on where we’ve been.
