starting the rehab today

I’ve been out of running all week so far, recovering from an injury to my sacroiliac joint in my back. Today is actually the first day that I don’t have major pain, I actually got up out of bed without pain. Its gotten a little sore since i’ve moved around, but I intend to continue my light activity today in hopes of getting back into things in a few days. My intention is to go for a short walk today down at the dyke to get the muscle strengthened again.

I’m trying to decide exactly how I will train for the marathon since I missed yet another week of training and by the time I start up again, it’ll be 12 weeks out or less. I’m not sure I can complete any formal training plan since there is nothing that short, but really i’m ahead of the game because i’ve already done long mileage and actually have a decent base in place. The important part right now is to not push it too hard so I don’t re-injure myself.

This has been the toughest injury I have had so far since I know I can’t push things too early. The sacroiliac joint absorbs all the shock that comes from the legs (they’re basically shock absorbers), and if I push it too early, it’ll flare up again. I think riding the bike tomorrow will be of benefit, because most of what I read is that I don’t want to put stress on it yet by running, jogging, lifting, etc, so staying on the bike should reduce any impact, along with the elliptical and/or Cross country machine. We’ll just have to play it by ear.

It’ll be tough with NO long run again this weekend, but I have to do what I have to do. In addition, the new years eve race is out, I’m not chancing it by racing at top speed when injured. Thats $16 I lost in the deal, but i’ll get over it!
