Speaking out against unspoken rules

rules

We’ve all heard of unspoken rules, but we don’t think about them until we find out that we may have violated one.

Unspoken rules are rules that are considered to be “logical” or “assumed” by a group or society, so the group doesn’t feel the need to write them out.

But challenges come up for new people to the group who are still learning the actual “spoken rules” that the group has.

I recently became aware that I violated an unspoken rule in a new group that I was a part of.

But in no way did I feel that this was logical or in any way assumed.

And I even inquired about what I was doing to ensure it was not against the rules.

Which led me to find out that my action was NOT an unspoken rule after all.

It was one persons perception of how things are supposed to work in the group.

Remember that unspoken rules are not always the rules of the group.

Many times, they are just misunderstandings between individuals.

So if a rule doesn’t seem logical, and it isn’t easily assumed.

It can likely be challenged and the group can grow from the result.

Have you ever broken an unspoken rule?
