I’ve talked for months now about doing my first triathlon in 2011, and I’ve finally committed myself to it. Yup, plunked down the cash and registered for the “Got the Nerve” sprint triathlon on May 21, 2011. I’m not sure exactly what it was that made me hold off, but I have a good idea that it was the uneasiness around swimming and I think i’m at a point now that I know I can get through 500 yards in Mt. Gretna Lake in May .. I also need to set that 2011 goal since we’re a week away from the new year (and another thing could be that the fee goes up $20 on 1/1).

So now this is going to happen .. hmmm, makes me wonder if I’ll be ready. I can’t imagine that I won’t be prepared though if I really think about it. I still have several weeks of conditioning and base training to go before I even start a 12 or 16 week formal training program. I guess I have to find an actual training plan though .. there seems to be a bunch of them available for free from different websites, so I think i’ll go that route. I picked up the Triathletes Training Bible, so I have some reading material to help get me prepared.

This week was a pretty good conditioning week, even with all the holiday eating I had to do. It kills me that every day at work last week there were cookies and cakes and all kinds of good stuff, it doesn’t do anything for my diet. Then I overate on both Christmas eve and Christmas day .. at least its all over now and i can look to better eating days now. As far as my workouts go, I got everything in despite the fact my back was bothering me Wednesday morning. I think I was just sore from my workouts because it didn’t last all day .. I did the normal athlete thing and went swimming and did a spin class anyway. I think it actually helped though because it got it loosened up .. regardless, the pain is gone now, so that’s really what is important.

The one thing I can say is that the conditioning workouts (circuit & interval training along with boot camp) is getting easier … and even swimming is getting easier, and think, I still have lots of weeks to train yet, I’m confident i’ll do okay ..
