I ran a 5K this past weekend to see just how much fitness I’ve lost in the offseason.
Much to my surprise, I ended up finishing in third place.
But finishing the race didn’t come easy.
My plan was to keep the first mile at a steady 7:07/min pace.
And then push the rest of the race as hard as I could.
But I ended up starting out WAY too fast and I was way off plan.
I knew I could not keep this pace & would never finish like this, so I slowed down.
After getting back on plan, I was able to sustain this slower pace, and I started finding success passing other runners.
In the last half mile, I felt so good that I was really able to push it & finish strong.
This race made me think about how we have to treat our businesses when we start or are looking for ways to grow.
Our tendency is to go as fast as we can with our new idea, doing everything, all the time, in order to make it happen.
Then we eventually realize we will never succeed at that pace.
But this new awareness puts us back on plan and in a better pace that works for us and for our business.
And we finish strong at our goal & celebrate the success.
Sound familiar?
Where are you at in your race?
