Earning a day off

I think back to weeks before the Pocono Marathon (run for the red) on how i always had to make sure that I earned my day off each week. Well, I can say that i earned it. My legs on Thursday were like jelly, although I did get in just over 4.5 miles at a very slow pace. I don’t even think I was doing a 9 minute mile. Thats okay then and even though we’ll be about a mile short of my scheduled distance for the week, I know I had a good week. I overcame the back pain I was having, I kicked butt in a race and didn’t cause myself any other pain anywhere. So that is something to celebrate.

Tomorrow will prove to be painful in some regard though since I have 18 miles scheduled, and then plan on taking my family to the Philly Zoo. I love going there, but its really going to suck after 18 miles to sit in a car for 2 hours, then walk around for another 4, 2 more hours in the car ….. then get up on Sunday and run 9 more miles. Its like suicide. I know i’ll survive it, but that doesn’t mean I have to like it. In addition, the temperature is supposed to be brutally hot the next three days (80’s into the 90’s), so even an early morning workout tomorrow will still be warm and worse on Sunday. Oh well, welcome to the life of training for a marathon, eh?

I’m using today to catch up on some things that I have to get done, and also resting, making sure I took some ibuprofen and am staying off my feet. I’m also drinking plenty of fluids and watching what I am eating. Its important I don’t overindulge before a long run like I usually do …. last weeks long run was kind of brutal, I have to try and do a little better this week, but we’ll see.

I’ve all but recovered from the race on Wednesday, still thrilled with my results. That will be hard to beat in the future. I’m concerned that I am now setting the bar so high in all my distances that I’ll never break them … guess we’ll have to see how that works out.

Nothing else too exciting going on … my body is sore, but with no major pain problems so far. We’ll see what next weeks ailment is.. On a happier note, I found that the class I was supposed to teach starting Tuesday (2 nights a week for 3.5 hours) was canceled due to lack of students. I’m upset, but not really too much because I was fearing being up late, trying to get up early to run and all the hassle around it. It would only be for 5 weeks, but feel like an eternity, I just wasn’t looking forward to it I guess. Now its not a problem.

Oh well, on to rest!
