a brutal week for training

I usually don’t write this early in the day, or on a Wednesday for that matter, but there isn’t much else to do during a major snowstorm except sit and write in the ole’ blog … we’re at 15 inches of snow already and its still coming down. Its been a tough week for training all around.. I’m suffering from a pretty good head cold right now (stuffed nose and head), which is probably the result of the blizzard run on Saturday, and then heading out again in 10 degree weather to do 19 miles on Sunday .. I figured it was only a matter of time until I got sick I guess. I’m in day 2 of full-blown stuffiness, hopefully it will start to subside tomorrow…

As far as this head cold goes, I started to feel terrible during work on Monday as my head started to get stuffed up, I managed to still get out and get 6 slow miles in on Tuesday morning instead of the planned 10 miles which never would have happened, so I figure with this head cold and now the snow, its a good week to take a stepback from training and take it easy .. i’ve gone through 7 weeks of pretty intense training already without a formal break. I missed my run this morning because of the snow, and then reduced my miles yesterday and tomorrow is a question mark, it only makes sense since I won’t make up the miles.

I am starting to understand more why I fell off of my training plan 3 years ago when I last ran the Ocean Drive marathon.. training in the wintertime is really brutal, it really is. Between the cold, and the snow, it just really starts to get you down and makes you NOT want to go out and run, and in turn that really makes you lose the motivation fast but we’re going to try and hold it together as best as we can. Its weird but February was brutal with snow 3 years ago when I trained for the Ocean Drive marathon (the infamous Valentines Day storm), and its been brutal again this year with back to back 12+ inch storms within a week .. but it hadn’t been so brutal the last 2 years with snow when I didn’t train for this marathon??? Coincidence?? I dunno.

So right now the focus is getting over this cold .. and then resting up my body for the final stretch of training, with the hope I can get out this weekend for a long run of some sort. It will all depend I guess. If not, thats okay, we’ll make it up somehow.

Spring? Well, I’ve counted 39 days until spring, I can’t wait … that doesn’t mean it’ll be warm, but we’re more than halfway through the worst part of winter (I hope).. got to think positive!
