I think its possible to be “overwet”

I had some strange thoughts going through my head this morning as I ran in probably the worst rain conditions so far this year. It made me think back to the original Seinfeld pilot episode that went something something like this:

GEORGE: You’re gonna “overdry” it.

JERRY: You, you can’t “overdry”.

GEORGE: Why not?

JERRY: Same as you can’t “overwet”. [George looks puzzled] You see, once something is wet, it’s wet. Same thing with dead: like once you die you’re dead, right? Let’s say you drop dead and I shoot you: you’re not gonna die again, you’re already dead. You can’t “overdie”, you can’t “overdry”.

I seriously think that I was overwet this morning, regardless if its really possible or not … for those not in the northeast US, it snowed overnight probably 2-3 inches or so up until at least 3:30am (when I first woke up) and it was a complete vision of white outside. I thought to myself, no big deal running in the snow, I rather enjoy it and it’ll be a welcome change. I then woke up with my alarm at 5am and the snow had already turned into rain .. that nice vision of white outside had turned into a slushy sloppy mess, not to mention it was really raining hard.

I could have easily just bagged my 6 miler today and done it on Friday, but Friday morning the low is supposed to be around 16 degrees, so I had to decide whether to brave the pouring rain, slush, and puddles or to brave the freezing cold. I decided to run today, I figured its just rain, it couldn’t be that bad, right?

All I can say is that I was wet … just wet, I mean overwet. The slush had pooled up huge puddles all over the roads, so my feet were just soaking wet right from the start. I had my jacket on, it was soaked. My hat and gloves, just dripping with water … my mp3 player didn’t make it either, it crapped out about 20 minutes in, but somehow I finished my run. I had to keep pushing myself though since I was doing half mile laps through my development (for safety sake) and each time I passed my house, I had to say … just another mile, and I did it. First it was just 3 miles I would do, then 4, then 5 and finally I figured i’d just finish it up. I find that sometimes this is the best way to get through tough runs because generally once you get out and going, its easier to push myself…

Anyway, I survived, thats what matters.

So its official now, I registered for the Ocean Drive marathon on March 28th…. I also decided to do the Flying Pig marathon in Cincinnati the first weekend of May … I found that a few weeks back I had indicated that I had to fly into Kentucky for the race, but I found that its a northern Kentucky airport and just a 10 minute ride to the city … that works for me, so I have to get my ticket and all, but thats pretty much set too..

Just under 2 weeks until training starts … I feel pretty well rested although work is keeping me pretty busy these days (helping to keep me from sleeping).. I’m confident that by pushing myself into running the cold, the rain, the snow, etc is only going to prepare me better for the conditions at the Ocean Drive marathon…
